How to Maintain Your New Home

So you have a gorgeous new Bill Roberts custom home—fantastic news! Now is the time to make a plan for how to maintain the home and keep it as clean as it was on move-in day.

Home maintenance can be easy if you break it down and map it out to accomplish tasks incrementally. A realistic, manageable goal of dedicating 10–15 minutes per day to various tasks can save you from devoting your sacred weekend time.

Here is a handy schedule to ensure it all gets done in the most efficient manner with the least amount of effort:

New home maintenance

Daily

  • Subdue dirty dishes – No one’s ever said, “I wish I hadn’t done the dishes last night.” Seeing a stack of dirty dishes when you grab your morning cup of joe is never a fun way to start the day. Try to be a person who embraces the task. You’ll thank yourself each morning.
  • Wipe countertops – There’s something particularly rewarding about clean countertops. It imparts a sense of completion and extends an invitation to return. A soft cloth and mild cleaner such as dish soap is sufficient. Be aware of acceptable sprays—and those not recommended—to spritz on your countertops. Surfaces such as granite and quartz require special care.
  • Spot sweep – Debris can scratch and scuff pristine floors. Protect your beautiful hardwood surfaces in just a few minutes each day. Store a broom or lightweight vacuum in an easily accessible place and keep dust and dirt at bay, particularly in heavy traffic areas.
Simple, strategic steps to maintaining your home

Weekly

  • Bathroom – It’s true; chores in this area of the home are not among the favorite, but they are necessary. Tasks such as tackling the porcelain throne and scrubbing the shower do offer a unique satisfaction when completed, so the only advice here is to just roll up your sleeves, slip on your gloves, and get it done. Keeping up with bathroom cleaning becomes invariably quicker and easier over time.
  • Microwave – From splatters to sparkling, skip the elbow grease and use 2 cups of vinegar water instead. Five minutes on high and the walls of your microwave practically clean themselves. This inexpensive, easy method will save you time and money.
  • Whole-house vacuum – Whether you hit the whole house in one shot or assign each day a different room, a thorough vacuuming of all floors will prolong the life of wood, tile, and carpet.
  • Appliance exteriors – Wipe down the fridge, dishwasher, and stove. Doing so once a week keeps the task quick and manageable.

Monthly

  • Refresh the washing machine – Throw in an affresh tablet, set the cycle to high and hot, and let the washer take care of itself.
  • Descale the dishwasher – Easy peasy: vinegar and baking soda do the trick to keep your dishwasher in tip-top shape.
  • Dust light fixtures & blinds – Shake it up with these ingenious tricks and tools.
  • Scour the oven – Every 3–6 months, give your oven some love on the self-cleaning setting.

Annually

Top off your schedule with these once-a-year tasks:

Need a physical checklist to stay on track? There are plenty to choose from online, or better yet, you can create your own personalized list specifically for your home and schedule. After all, your custom home is special, so your checklist should be too. Simple, strategic steps to maintaining your home will help keep it fresh and beautiful for years to come.

What to Expect During the Custom Home Building Process

Home Building Process

Do you want to own a home that perfectly suits your wants and needs? Of course you do! Designing and building a home from scratch is the best way to make this a reality. Oh, the possibilities . . . exciting, right? And if we’re being honest, maybe a little daunting too. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be at all.

At Bill Roberts Custom Homes, we’ve mapped out a home building process that ensures your experience is positive and rewarding. Step by step, our in-house design/build team offers a tried-and-true system to ensure efficiency, time and cost savings, and your satisfaction at every step in the creation of your new home.

Here’s what you can expect when you build a custom home with Bill Roberts:

Home Building Process

Design

The first step in designing your custom home involves choosing your floor plan. You can opt for one from our selection or you can create a unique, custom-drawn plan. Next, with the guidance of a Design Specialist, you will customize the structure of your home to meet your personal needs and desires. Best of all, you’ll receive a 3D architectural rendering to get a sneak peek of your beautiful dream home.

Once the floor plan is perfect, you’ve approved the pricing proposal, and you’ve signed a contract, it’s time to let your inner interior designer come out to play. From cabinetry to interior finishes such as flooring, countertops, paint, and hardware, you’ll choose the style you desire for your new home. Our expert Interior Designer will lend her knowledge as she guides you along the journey. Once you’ve selected your finishes, it’s time to start building.

Build

You’ve made all the design decisions, and now it’s time for the real fun to begin. Before we break ground, however, you will come in for a pre-construction meeting. Here we will discuss the next steps and answer any questions you may have. As construction begins, so too do our daily communication reports. Each day you can expect to receive an update regarding the progress our team of craftsmen has made.

With all the preliminary work done, it is time to start constructing. Here is the basic order of events you can expect to see in the home building process:

  • Foundation
  • Rough-in plumbing, heat, and air
  • Framing and roofing
  • Windows and doors
  • HVAC and plumbing
  • Drywall and insulation

Along the way you’ll have walk-throughs to approve the following:

  • Placement of outlets and light fixtures (electrical)
  • Tile (indoor)
  • Accent brick or capstones (exterior)
  • Layout of closets, pantries, and beams
  • Landscape design

Finally, once the trim, cabinets, and closets have been installed; the walls have been painted; and final finishes have been added throughout the interior, it’s time for a punch list walk-through with your Project Manager, followed by a final walk-through. Once you’re absolutely satisfied, it’s time to close and move into your new home.

It’s a special day when you receive the keys to your exquisitely designed custom home. With Bill Roberts Custom Homes, you’re in good hands. Our commitment to superior craftsmanship and a customer-focused home building process ensures the home you’ve dreamed of becomes your reality. Ready to get started?
